Austin, TX

Molly Fonseca and Anikka Lekven dreamed up Broad Theatre in the summer of 2019. After meeting during a run of the play, Junk, the two bonded over a shared desire to challenge the theatrical landscape in Austin and produce more shows by and for people with marginalized genders. The first show they collaborated on as a creative duo was Fonseca’s one-woman show, MS, for which Fonseca wrote and directed, and Lekven acted. Taking place in the Pony-Shed outside of the popular Austin venue, The Vortex, the successful run of this show cemented their desire to continue their creative partnership. Their next venture, I’m Still Leaving, premiered during FronteraFest 2020, and was part of the festival’s Best of Fest winners. The two continued to make a splash at FronteraFest in 2023 with a commission from Scriptworks for their play, A Woman Manages Her Anxiety. This play marked the first time the two expanded their creative partnerships, as they worked with Ariane Stier, Mars Johnson, and Emily Tolson. A Woman Manages Her Anxiety continued their streak of Best of Fest wins and the two knew it was time to expand their projects. In 2024 the premiere of Lekven’s Hungry Teenage Track Stars became their first full-length production, and a precedent for the shows Broad Theatre continues to produce to this day.

Broad Theatre delivers bold, innovative, and provocative theatre experiences written by and for people with marginalized genders. We partner with emerging playwrights in the Austin area to premiere new stories for a new Austin.
